WELCOME TO THE 8TH NEWSLETTER!
Whether you are winding down for the year or mid-way through your last 2019 tour we hope our members out there are having a great time, we have loved seeing your updates! |
We would like to share some of the WILM highlights from the past three months: |
September – PLASA London 2019
|
|
We loved meeting everyone at PLASA 2019 |
|
At this years’ PLASA, Malle Kaas (CEO) and Hannah Brodrick (Co-Director) held a workshop “How to Survive & Thrive in the Music Industry” which was a great success! |
We shared some tips on how to get your foot in the door, and more importantly – how to stay there. We also shared our secrets on creating a great CV for freelance work, and how to keep busy during the slow season. |
We recommended tools for personal wellbeing out on the road – how to prevent burn out and handle stress symptoms when they occur.
Was so great to meet everyone who came! |
September – dLive Mix Master Class, Stockholm
|
|
Great turnout for the dLive Mix master Class! |
|
|
|
Just a few days after PLASA we were super happy to collaborate on our first dLive Mix Master Class with Allen & Heath!
The master class took place in Stockholm, where Benum Sweden very kindly offered us a space in their building. |
Each night after learning many new skills at the workshop, our members got a chance to unwind in Stockholm and had great fun visiting the ABBA museum and the amusement park Gröna Lund. Thank you to everyone who came and made it such an enjoyable experience, and a massive thanks to Benum for hosting this workshop at their great facilities in Stockholm. |

October EPOS (‘Equality & Plurality On Stage’) in Stockholm
EPOS – a swedish network for female dancers and musicians were so nice to invite us to their International Network Day 2019, as they were interested in getting a glance of the conditions for women working behind the stage. This led to some very inspiring talks across the different zones of the live music industry, where KeyChange, Rockdonna and other organisations were also represented. |

|
|
October – MaMa Festival Paris
|
|
WILM was represented at the MaMa Festival in Paris (As a JUMP delegate) by Sana Romanos. She spoke on a panel about female networking and initiatives in the live music industry. *JUMP is an innovation program, and a result of 6 European festivals and the European Commission.
“Taking part in the MaMa convention, which is the hub for the French and European music industry, has been a great experience for WILM. Also meeting up with the JUMP team has been a delight, with so many great ideas from all over Europe. WILM was also present at a panel discussing the presence of women in the music industry alongside some very enriching and interesting women from all districts of the industry.” |

October – Deeds Not Words, Brussels
Matias Flensborg represented WILM at the Deeds Not Words event in Brussels. We were invited to this very exciting event by GMCA (Greater Manchester Combined Authority). |
The discussion focused on diversity in all fields of music and art and EU regulations on such matters. The event was divided into three sessions. Matias was part of the panel in two of those sessions. In the first he shared some of WILM’s experiences throughout Europe, giving the attendees an idea of the sorts of problems and challenges, that professional female crew-members encounter in their line of business. In the third panel, he got to share some of WILM’s solutions and changes that are needed in the live industry, in order to create a more gender diverse working environment. |
October – AES, New York
|
|
|
|
WILM CEO Malle Kaas attended the Audio Engineering Society convention 2019 in New York with a presentation on ‘How to organise an unbiased P.A. comparison’. A project that WILM has been involved with in association with Vice Chairman Technical Committee of AES Eddy Bøgh Brixen for the last year and a half. On board the panel Eddy and Malle were joined by Director of System Optimization at Meyer Sound, Bob McCarthy, Product Manager at L’acoustic Scott Sugden and Live Sound Engineer Gil Craig from New Zealand. |
November – Nouvelle Prague 2019
For the first time, Nouvelle, an international showcase festival & conference were held in Prague. WILM was represented by CEO Malle Kaas, who participated in a panel, moderated by radio host Marie Ctverackova from Radio Wave, CZ.
The panel was called ‘Take The Power Back’. Though as Malle Kaas asked: “Take the power back from whom?” In WILM we don’t want to take the power away from anyone. We believe finding the power within our self is more sustainable. |
The end of WILM’s fellowship at JUMP, EU
From February – November 2019 WILM has been part of the European innovation program ‘JUMP’, a collaboration between the European Commission and eight european festivals, among them ‘Lollapalooza, Berlin’. Besides visiting all eight festivals during 2019, the 10 fellow projects with WILM included, were skilled in pitching, funding, business development, social media and marketing. |
WILM was honored to be part of this program, and very excited about the international network we were introduced to. And we are beyond grateful to our tutor Celia Castillo, Chief Marketing Officer at Ticketmaster and the expertise she shared. |
Check out more about JUMP here. |

Smaart training
As you may remember in our last newsletter we announced our two members who got a special WILM attendance spot on the Smaart Training course.
One of them Aistė Baltraitytė sent us a postcard after completing the course.
“Huge thank you to Rational Acoustics and WILM for giving me an opportunity to attend Smaart Operators Fundamentals + Advanced Practicum in Latvia, Riga, led by Aleksandras Ratmanovas. |
The theory thoroughly explained by Aleksandras was instantly put to work by lots of practical exercises. This expanded my knowledge and understanding on using Smaart and its possibilities. A lovely company of Smaart users of various backgrounds and expertise was perfect to study and improve together”. |
Greetings from around the world is the best! We are so glad we were able to offer this opportunity. Thanks again to Rational Acoustics.
For all of our members, Rational Acoustics have been so kind to offer us a 15% discount on their online products. Please, email us for a voucher at info@womeninlivemusic.eu |
We are still trying to map out how many female crew members there are in Europe (on the road, in the venues, in the production offices etc.) If you are one of our female co-workers from Europe, please take two minutes and fill out THIS SURVEY, Thanks! |
