Industry Talk with Lea Mellentin: 3 Opportunities for women in festivals right now – tips for volunteers
We have spoken to Lea Mellemtin from ‘Event Geist’ in Germany 🇩🇪
Lea:
Whether you’re curious about the live events world or looking to break into the festival scene, volunteering is a fantastic way to start. Many festivals are actively looking for helping hands, and you don’t need any prior experience to join in. Here are three key tips and opportunities for women interested in taking the first step:
1. How to Get Involved
Start by researching festivals in your area. Visit their official websites and check the sections titled “Get Involved,” “Volunteer,” or “Join the Team.” Many festivals offer entry-level volunteer positions in areas like stagehand/show crew, ticketing, artist care, cleaning crews, or logistics. These tasks (often referred to as helper roles) usually don’t require any previous knowledge. What matters most is motivation, reliability, and a willingness to learn.
2. What to Expect & How to Prepare
Volunteering at a festival can be physically intense, wildly fun, and incredibly rewarding — but it can be hard work as well. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Teamwork is everything. It doesn’t matter if the terms or tools are new to you, as long as you’re willing to help where needed.
- Shifts vary. Be ready for early mornings, late nights, and long hours on your feet.
- The weather can be unpredictable. You’ll work in all conditions: sun, rain, wind, or cold — sometimes all of the above in one day. Bring sunscreen, warm layers, a rain jacket, and spare clothes.
3. Where It Can Lead
Volunteering can be your foot in the door. You’ll gain practical insights into how festivals really work, make valuable contacts, and build confidence in a new environment. Many professionals working today in production, artist relations, or logistics started out by lending a hand at festivals. What starts with a volunteer wristband could lead to your first paid job — and from there, the sky’s the limit.
So: Find a festival, sign up, show up, and soak it all in. This summer might just change your path 🎪
